Ryan S. Trimm (2005)在其論文〈Inside Job: Professionalism and Postimperial Communities in The Remains of the Day〉中主張,石黑一雄在其榮獲布克獎的代表作《長日將近》中,採取輕描淡寫的筆法,對英國的歷史和政治進行宏觀的隱喻與指涉。

Ryan S. Trimm argues in “Inside Job: Professionalism and Postimperial Communities in The Remains of the Day” that Kazuo Ishiguro has understatedly uncovered historical and political allusions and matched macro-narratives of the public history of England in his award-winning magnum opus, The Remains of the Day (136). Although he denied his attempt to narrate and rebuild England with a historically accurate approach, many critics still argue that Ishiguro refers to political issues in the novel, such as the rise of Fascism in England. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the political allusions to the Fascist doctrines that appeared in the interwar period in England, to the downfall of the British Empire, and to the political disengagement of normal people in England that The Remains of the Day addresses. The paper will analyze literary elements in the novel, such as the characters, the dialogue, and the plot, to explore how Kazuo Ishiguro alludes to British politics, thereby conforming to macro-narratives of the public history of England.
