● 如何讚美人 Practice complementing each other. In what situation do you find it easy to compliment your friend?  Please choose one of the following situations to practice giving compliments.  

● In what situation is it not ok to compliment others? Explain why.

 

Complimenting one’s appearance

Complimenting one’s learning attitudes or methods

Complimenting one’s way of making friends

Complimenting one’s English or Chinese

Complimenting one’s dancing or other skills

Complimenting one’s dorm or home

 

Situation not good for compliment

When you are jealous

When your friend is too proud

When you may sound flattering

When there is a conflict of interest  

When some one else disagrees with you

When your compliment may be misunderstood

Dean: They have a talent for music and art. Look at this stone.  The way they painted it makes it look like a real stone.

Cooper: I didn’t know that you’re so talented!

Dean: That’s really nothing.  I am really grateful to have these students in my life.

● Take a look at this page (Soft Skills: Cultural Differences in Gift Giving), and discuss what gifts to provide to different types of people (e.g. business co-workers, clients, teachers, parents, siblings, classmates, a stranger from another culture who helped you) and/or in different occasion (wedding, parties, graduation, birthday, etc).

● Have you ever got any creative ideas of giving gifts?
