Compare two historical sites or areas in Taiwan/Taipei and discuss
1) whether they are well-preserved,
2) whether they are popular with tourists and local people alike, and
3) whether they represent a cultural mix, and whether their meanings have beenrevised and extended.

Here are a few examples in Taipei:
 Spot-Taipei Film House-- built in 1926 with a southern colonial architectural style under the Japanese colonial period, was originally the residency of the U.S. Ambassador.
 Huashan 1914 creative park, opened in 1914 as Taipei Winery, is now the site of a cinema, a gallery, several boutiques and restaurants.
 Tsai Jui-Yueh Dance Research Institute, built in 1920, was a Japanese style house for the residency of the Japanese Governor. 

Tamsui Old Street, Hsinchuan Old Street, and the list can go on and on.

1) Here are two descriptions of two ways of turn-taking:
Read the paragraph below. Which language (xxx) do you think is being described?

“Littlewood (1992: 29) affirms that “the basic expectation, at least for xxx speakers, is that there will always be one person (but only one person) speaking at a time.” According to Cook overlap of turns occurs in only about 5 per cent of conversation or less, which, in his opinion, suggests that speakers somehow know exactly when and where to enter. For him, overlapping of turns is almost an emergency situation, “signaling annoyance, urgency, or a desire to correct what is being said.” (1989:52)

“The first department meeting was today… It started off well, and I actually got the gist of the first topic…No doubt I understood that much because it’s all too familiar in my own work, and the chairperson had a clear diagram on the blackboard. However, after that topic was closed, I did not understand another word for the remainder of the meeting…The only observation I can report is that turn-taking rules for meetings in xxx are different from those in the U.S. There was a great deal of overlap among participants, and the general atmosphere was a lot rowdier than what I’m used to.” ( Schmidt and Frota study [1985, pp.242-3])
